Squeaky Floor Repair in Portland.
Fixed at the Source.
That squeak isn't your carpet. It's wood rubbing on wood or on a loose nail underneath. We fold the carpet back, screw the subfloor down tight to the joists, secure any loose wall plates along the edges of the room, then re-stretch your carpet so it looks like we were never there.
Most Squeak Fixes Only Treat the Middle of the Room.
Screw kits driven through the carpet go after the subfloor and stop there. But a lot of squeaks live along the walls, in hallways and at doorways, where the wall's bottom plate has worked loose from the floor. We fix both, so the squeak doesn't just move two feet over.
The 3 Causes We Find Under Portland Carpet
Every squeak comes from movement: two pieces of wood, or wood and a nail, rubbing when you step. Here's where we find it, and what we do about each one.
Subfloor lifting off the joists
Over the years, plywood or OSB subfloor separates from the joists below it. Every step pushes it down and it rubs against the joist or the nails holding it. This is the classic squeak in the middle of a room.
Fix: screwed to the joistsLoose wall plates
The bottom plate of a wall is the 2x4 that sits flat on the subfloor. When it isn't fastened tight, the floor flexes against it and creaks along the wall, at door openings and down hallways. Most squeak repair never touches it.
Fix: plate fastened down tightLoose or backed-out nails
Original nails loosen as the wood dries and shrinks through Portland's wet-to-dry seasons. The subfloor slides up and down the nail and squeaks. Smooth nails lose their grip, but screws don't.
Fix: structural screwsSqueaks Along the Wall?
It's Usually the Wall Plate.
If your floor creaks when you walk next to a wall, through a doorway or down the hall, screwing the middle of the room won't touch it. The noise is coming from the bottom plate of the wall, the board the whole wall stands on. When it's loose, the subfloor moves against it every time you step near it.
Because we lift the carpet at the tack strip anyway, we can get right to the base of the wall. We fasten the loose plate back down tight to the subfloor and framing, then reinstall the pad and power-stretch the carpet back onto the tack strip.

- Fixed from above, no drywall or ceiling work below
- Done in the same visit as the subfloor screws

How We Fix a Squeaky Floor Under Carpet
No new carpet, no ripping anything out, and nothing to patch afterward. Here's the whole job, start to finish.
Find every squeak
We walk the room with you, mark each squeak and figure out if it's coming from the subfloor, a loose nail or a wall plate.
Fold back the carpet and pad
We release the carpet from the tack strip and fold it back carefully, without cutting it. The pad comes up so we're working on bare subfloor.
Screw the subfloor to the joists
We locate the joists and drive structural screws through the subfloor into each one, pulling the panels down tight so they can't move or rub.
Fasten loose wall plates
Along the walls and door openings, we fasten any loose bottom plates back down, taking care of the squeaks most repairs miss.
Walk it again
Before anything goes back down, we walk the bare floor to make sure the squeaks are gone, not just quieter.
Reinstall and power-stretch
The pad goes back, and the carpet is power-stretched onto the tack strip so it's tighter and smoother than before we arrived.
Screw Kits vs. Doing It Right
Through-the-carpet squeak kits are cheap and fast. Here's why we don't use them.
Through-the-carpet kits
- Done blind, so screws can miss the joist entirely
- Can't reach wall plates under the tack strip
- Can snag and pull carpet fibers at every screw
- Squeaks often come back or just move over
The Carpet Surgeon way
- Bare subfloor, so we see every joist and seam
- Wall plates fixed in the same visit
- Carpet is folded back, never cut
- Power-stretched back tight when we're done
